Sound Sync

31st October, 2009

Since I have been at the Atrium, studying art and animation, I’ve managed to produce some 3D animation - a bouncing tennis ball, cannon ball, and a balloon.

You may take a look at these fundamental animation principles which are in my new 3D Animation section.

In addition to this, I worked on a sound synchronisation project where we had to synchronise an animation with some music. First we had to analyse and scrub the music with Adobe Premiere software, and record our observations of visual (by sight in the spectrum analyser) and aural (by ear, listening to the attack and fade of the individual instruments) elements within the music.

These observations were then drawn as visually as possible, in some bar charts, detailing where the instruments began playing, the nature of their sound, and where they stopped. The timing is calculated in frames, where the music is measured at 25 frames per second.

The animation is then supposed to be animated according to the bar chart, which shows the start, characteristics, and end of each instrument within the music track.

You may take a look at my sound analysis bar charts here -

The synchronised (hopefully) animation may be seen in my Sound Design section.

I’ve also completed some sketches, a few of them are available in my Sketchwork section.

Thank you.
